Maximizing Opportunity through Leverage

It's important to start with definitions. Leverage can be defined in two ways:

  1. As a noun - The exertion of force by means of a lever or an object used in the manner of a lever.

  2. As a verb - Use (something) to it's maximum advantage.

Career growth can be hard. In today's world, even finding a position can be a challenge. Young professionals every day are seeking new opportunities in the work force, and many times aren't offered the right one.

So, how does one determine what position is right for you?

At 1516, we spend a lot of time thinking about job satisfaction. It's important to us that every individual who spends time at our company has a reason to be here. Job satisfaction can be looked at through three frames.

  1. Culture - The said and unsaid expectations of each member of the team.

  1. Growth - Professional growth (moving up in position, new responsibilities, skill building) and personal growth (mindset development, circle of influence, habits).

  1. Finances - How much money one makes.

What matters the most to you? Every one of these is important. No one would totally give one up for the other. No matter what is most important to you, you must understand what is the leverage that is offered. How does the short term benefit the long term?

Culture focused -

Pro: You will develop great relationships within the workplace. Because people are motivated by each other, the team will ultimately perform better.

Con: Due to this focus on culture, promotions may be given to those who are more popular with upper management.

Growth focused -

Pro: Clear, black and white metrics for opportunity. This fosters a very competitive environment. Everyone wants to go somewhere, and it's motivating to be a part of a team that each individual has the growth mindset.

Con: People can be hard to relate to, especially more tenured employees. This has less personal relationship building, and more professional relationship building.

Financial focused -

Pro: This is a shark tank. Everyone is looking to prove themselves, and it is always about the bottom line. This company is guaranteed to grow. Companies only grow if they make more money.

Con: You must fend for yourself. These types of teams will encourage you to figure it out, or get out.

Now...

What does leverage have anything to do with this?

How can you get more out than you put in?

Three ways. Join a company that already has the same values as you, be the force of positive change in your next/current opportunity, or start your own opportunity.

Ultimately, the guaranteed way to make a change is that you must be the change. There is no guarantee you will find the right company. Do not wait for perfect conditions to start making a change in your career.

If you are not in the position you want to be in today, start working towards it. Your life can change drastically in a month, or six, or twelve.

If you know what your vision is, you can make it come true. You must know what is important to you, and you must understand what you will get out of it.

Do not coast through this life and hope things will get better. If you want more, you must do more. Just make sure that you are in a vehicle that has opportunity for you to live your future today.
